Why every additional gram and every extra connector matters
Date:2026-09-12
Everything that can slow a race car down is the enemy: the weight of the wires, the weight of the connectors, outright failure, and — the worst kind — intermittent failure that is harder to isolate. This is why Formula 1 may use 30 AWG wire where an OEM would use 18 AWG, and why the McLaren MP4-12C went to the extreme of specifying hexagonal aluminium wire to save both space and weight.
In motorsport electronics, mil-spec circular connectors are the norm — full of strain-reducing service loops and concentric twisting for flexibility and compactness. The opening metaphor in the original article is the right one to end on: “Reliability at 30,000 feet or going airborne at the Nürburgring… it’s all the same thing… well, sort of the same thing.”
