Aerospace: the other end of the scale
Date:2026-09-12
At the opposite extreme sits aerospace. The Airbus A380, for example, has 530 km of wire, more than 100,000 individual wires, and 40,300 connectors performing 1,150 separate functions. It is, in Airbus’s own words, the most complex electrical system the company had ever designed at the time of launch — and they had to rip it all out and start over once because software-incompatibility issues between suppliers made the original design un-buildable.
Worth noting: the A380 wiring does not use concentric twisting, DR-25, or RT-125 epoxy. It targets a 20,000-flight-hour service life under continuously varying pressure and temperature, which is a different optimisation problem from a race car. There is no DR-25 in an A380 because the harness does not need to be sealed against fluid splash — it needs to be light, serviceable, and tolerant of pressure cycling.
